When preparing a will or other document your finished product should be printed precisely as though it came out of a word processor in a lawyer's office, ready for your signature.  Sometimes this is not possible without your help.  When text is printed from the web a lot of unnecessary clutter is included in the headers and footers because of browser settings.  Most of this clutter you can do without when preparing a will or other legal document.  But first you have to make certain adjustments to your browser.  Prior to making any adjustments, however, you should first print out a sample page to see exactly what is contained in your headers and footers. Hopefully, you will not need to change anything.

AOL

For AOL users there is good news and bad news.  The bad news is that you can't make any margin or footer and header adjustments to your browser before printing.  The good news is you don't have to.  AOL includes in the header the type of document and page number to total pages.  This perpetuates on the document itself the page number and number of pages to prevent tampering. If you prefer to edit what is in your headers and footers, you can download Internet Explorer or Netscape and simply click on its icon after you have logged on to AOL. Explorer and Netscape allow you to adjust your headers and footers. (See below)

Internet Explorer 5.0 and upgrades

Get Internet Explorer 6 SP1

Click on "File" and go to “Page Setup”.  Make sure that the paper size is set for “Letter 8 ½ x 11 in”. Remove all the symbols in “Headers” and “Footers”.  Then go to the “Help” button on your main toolbar.  Click on “Index”.  Next type in “footer”.  When “footer, printing” appears click on “Display”.  This section will explain how to control what information appears in your headers and footers.  We would recommend that you set the footers to show the date, aligned on the left side, and the number of pages, aligned on the right side.  This will give you a record on your document of the date it was prepared and the number of pages included. If you prefer this information can be contained in the headers instead. Set your margins.  We recommend “1.00 in” for right and left margins and ".70 in" for top and bottom if you elect not to have headers or footers.  If you elect to have headers or footers set your top and bottom margins for ".50".

Netscape Navigator 4.75 and upgrades

Click on "File" and go to "Page Setup".  Click the radio button next to "Black Text". View the options available for headers and footers. If you want the Document Title and Document Location (URL) printed in your header make sure those radio buttons are clicked.  If you want your Page Number, Page Total and Date Printed showing in the footers make sure those radio buttons are clicked. Set your margins.  We recommend 1.00" for right and left margins and .70" for top and bottom if you elect not to have headers or footers.  It you elect to have headers or footers set your top and bottom margins to .50".

Opera 5.12 and upgrades

A nifty, lightweight browser, perfect for processing documents.  The Print Preview mode even allows you to view exactly the way your document will be printed.  Go to "File" and click on "Print Preview".  If you want to make adjustments to your top, bottom, right or left margins, go to "File" and click on "Print Options".  You may then set the appropriate margin.  You may also elect to include headers or footers under Print Options as well.  The only problem is you can't control what goes in the header or footer.  If you elect to print headers and footers, you will get the type of document in the top left header and the page number in the top right header.  The bottom left footer will contain the URL for Wills For America and the bottom right footer will include the date and time you purchased your document.

After you have set your margins and headers and footers, you may print out your document.  If you are not satisfied with the result, you may reset the margins and print it out again.  There is no limit to the number of times you may print. If you have made a clerical error in typing the information for your will, you may hit the back button on your browser, click the reset button and reenter your information.

TIP

For novice computer operators you may consider downloading your will or other document to disk before you attempt to adjust your browser and make any new settings. Should you hit the wrong button during the process, your document will always remain in place.
